Sweet Corn

I love sweet corn.  Fresh picked, Illinois sweet corn.

I planted sweet corn three different times this spring, so our season was spread out over about five weeks.  It was a productive year.  Yesterday we ate the last ears that weren't too hard yet.  I ate an average of two ears a day over those five weeks, so you can figure out how many ears of fresh sweet corn I've had this summer! I don't seem to get tired of it.

We had very little damage from the derecho.  A lot of little branches blew down from our walnut trees, but also, most of the pears blew off the pear trees.  The old farmers wife has been busy canning pears!

I harvested my honey the first week of August.  The bees gave me a little more than last year, but only one of my two hives had honey I could take.

All set up to extract honey.

We are still worshiping in the tent, and with the exception of one rainy Sunday, have enjoyed very pleasant weather.  We had a tent wedding one Sunday (with center aisle painted on the grass).  The following weekend we were blessed to hear Chris's testimony Saturday night (inside) and witness his baptism on Sunday outside in the tent.  They located the tank we used when we were meeting in the grade school back in the mid '70's, and retrieved it for the occasion.  Since it was a warm day, Chris elected to stay in wet clothes for the socially distanced greeting line rather than make everyone wait for him to change.  The following weekend we were able to hold communion (inside) which had been cancelled in the spring.  There were some minor alterations to standard practice, but it was a blessed evening.

It is the same spirit whether in or out, and the same blessed fellowship.

We are getting used to this new "normal", but are really ready for things to get back to the old normal!

And as soon as the commandment came abroad, the children of Israel brought in abundance the firstfruits of corn, wine, and oil, and honey, and of all the increase of the field; and the tithe of all things brought they in abundantly.

II Chonicles 31:5
