Backdating

Wow, it's been awhile!

I got the wheat harvested early this year, and it was a great crop - 101 bushels per acre!  I was able to get my double crop soybeans in the ground on June 29th, which is earlier than normal also.  My first field of corn started tasseling on July 4th.  We have had adequate rainfall, so the crop looks good.  Never a big rain, but always enough to carry us to the next one.

We went to Ron and Kary's to watch fireworks on the 4th.  The crowd at the lake seemed to be down this year.  The weather was pleasant, and the traditional root beer floats afterwards were good.

We had some hot, humid weeks in July and I realized that I can't work as hard in the heat as I used to.  On the really hot days, I take a 3 hour long lunch, and then work in the evening when it is cooler.  Greenfield Contractors repaired the newer of my two hoop buildings.  It now is back in usable condition.  I am not sure if I will put hogs in it anymore, but it is ready if I need to.

I found a patch of wild strawberries growing in our yard. They have little tiny berries that aren't as sweet as cultivated ones.

The old farmer took the wife of his youth out to eat to the Midway Duck Inn one Sunday evening.  I enjoyed their frog leg dinner.  It's an interesting little place along the Illinois river north of Spring Bay.  The place was half full of Peoria AC's.

It has been a good year so far for produce.  We had a good sweet corm crop, but the season was more condensed than I would have liked.  My two little peach trees gave me three bushels of peaches.  I picked three bushels of pears off of my pear trees, but they have gotten so tall I can't reach the highest ones anymore. Even with a picking pole from the top of my step ladder.  I was able to harvest 39 pounds of honey off of the one hive that was productive this year.  The poor crop this year seems to be a reduced apple crop.

Summer sunset.
