Round Up

We finished corn on Saturday and quickly switched the planter over to soybeans.  We had several wheel bearings go out on the field cultivator and a flat tire on the planter, but we finished our first bean field and got the equipment home to the shed for the weekend.  Sunday morning we noticed that our first corn was up!

We received .8" of rain which put us out of the fields for a few days, so we drove down to C-U on Tuesday for an evening of Chamber Music.  Nephew Ned was playing in a piano/string quartet in the Smith Memorial Room in Smith Hall.  We met Randy and Karen there, and enjoyed our evening of music.  Afterwards, we made the obligatory DQ stop for ice cream and visiting.
Another late night.

Wednesday, I planted our sweet corn and green beans with the 6 row planter.  We'll probably plant some more in a week or so to spread the season.

Early this morning, we received a call from our neighbors saying that there were cows in their yard.  Nephew Trent had bought 8 new calves at the sale barn yesterday and they managed to get out of their pen overnight.  Some headed North and some headed South.  I headed out over the field with a tractor, and we managed to get the North batch rounded up fairly quickly.  The South batch took a bit more time and effort.  The neighbor was herding them on his golf cart and the rest of us were running across the fields. They didn't want to go in the direction we wanted them to, but they finally got them corralled at another neighbor's farm.  They were then loaded on a trailer and brought back home.
We got in our morning exercise before breakfast.

This afternoon we went back to the field to plant soybeans.  The soil had dried quickly with the heat and sun from the last couple of days.  We managed to finish planting one field, just beating the rain front that moved in.  With the prediction for three days of rain, it might be awhile before we can plant any more soybeans.

But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings; and ye shall go forth, and grow up as calves of the stall.

Wondering about harvest by now--we have had a lot of rain. Ground is saturated. Thankful. We needed rain after not too much moisture and snow this winter.

I also want to wish you a happy birthday.
